Lake Betz is a private place in RTP on Louis Stephens Road next door to NetApp (7301 Kit Creek Road, Morrisville, NC). The lake has a short 1/2-mile trail on the north side. The trail is bordered on the north by several swamps with large, dead tree trunks. The swamps attract a large number of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and several other species of birds.  Here is the ebird.org HotSpot bird list for Lake Betz: http://ebird.org/hotspot/L1471163 From 55: Turn onto Kit Creek Road, go over the RR tracks, and turn RIGHT at the traffic light for Louis Stephens Road. Turn left into NetApp parking lot and park near the stairs that lead to the lake. OR, continue on Louis Stephens Road a short distance, and park in the unmarked dirt parking lot on the right side of the road (it has vollyball nets and a port-a-jon). I will meet you near the NetApp stairs. If you are running late, walk the paved trail along Lake Betz and the swamps. Call me if you cannot find me: Erla, [masked] Note that our meeting time of 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. means that, if you live in Raleigh, you will be driving back in rush-hour traffic. I am volunteering at the Kramden Institute in Durham at 5 p.m., and that's just five minutes down the road from Lake Betz. Thus the odd starting time. (We build computers for kids; see  www.kramden.org  for more details.) You can continue on Louis Stephens to return to Cary. Note that there is only a porta-a-jon at Lake Betz. Parking in the NetApp lot should not be a problem, but you can also park in the sandy lot that is just south of NetApp, on the opposite side of the road. You never know what you may see at Lake Betz!
